Lex is an AI-powered word processor that functions much like a traditional Google Doc, with the added feature that allows writers to call upon AI assistance when they need it. It uses the same model that powers ChatGPT.

Sign up for a free account with Lex. Paid for accounts give users access to more advanced features and better AI models, but the free version is still quite capable at providing feedback on different types of writing.

Explore Use Cases With Lex

1). Brainstorming Titles:

Use Lex’s built-in title generator to explore ways you can brainstorm titles. Copy the generated paragraph below into Lex or write your own, then use the Brainstorming Title feature

Generated Paragraph: The advent of self-driving cars presents a significant challenge to ride-sharing services like Uber. As autonomous technology progresses, it promises to offer safer, more efficient, and potentially cheaper rides without the need for human drivers. This disrupts Uber's current business model, which relies heavily on a vast network of independent contractors. There's an impending need for Uber and similar companies to adapt by either integrating self-driving technology into their fleet or innovating new service models. Additionally, regulatory, ethical, and logistical hurdles abound, as society must address the implications of widespread automation, including job displacement and safety protocols. The transition to self-driving vehicles is a complex, multifaceted challenge that extends beyond the technology itself, encompassing legal, societal, and economic dimensions.

2). Use Ask Lex to Explore Counterarguments

Highlight a portion of the text, then use the “Ask Lex” feature on it to generate potential ideas for counterarguments.

Sentence to prompt: What are some potential counterarguments that I might explore for this claim?

3). Get Feedback on Your Writing

Click on the right command bar at the top and select the Ask Lex icon. From here, you can get overall feedback from the AI model on your writing, ideation assistance, help sharpening your introduction, identifying weak arguments, or overcoming writer’s block. Try several of these features.

4). Generate Text

Lex uses your own writing as the prompt to generate text only when you want it to. The whole point is using AI when you need it. To engage the AI features, simply type three pluses: +++ . This sends a command to the AI system to read your writing, then generate a response.

Try clicking on the Commands tab in the upper right hand corner to activate the different AI features.

5). Share Your Draft

Just like Google Docs, Lex lets users share drafts and leave comments, even work collaboratively together. To use it, simply click the share button at the bottom right of the screen, then select the “edit link” and share the link with someone in your group

6). Show AI-Written Text

You can click on settings and then select view settings to see AI generated text within your own draft or a copy that someone shared with you using the Edit Link feature. Simply toggle on the AI-written text feature. Doing so will show what was generated by AI through Lex; however, it will not show if someone generated text with an outside program, like ChatGPT, then copied it into the draft.

7). Use the Run Checks feature

Lex also has grammar and sentence mechanics checks built into place, like Grammarly. Simply click on the Run AI Checks tab on the right hand column and select what you’d like AI’s help checking your document for errors.
